Firefighters have been tackling a heath blaze which broke out in Ipswich this afternoon.

At its height, six crews were responding to the incident on Rushmere Heath, which was first reported at about 12.40pm.

Suffolk Fire and Rescue officials asked people to keep clear of the area while they dealt with the incident, which is now under control.

People who live in the Heath Lane area were also urged to keep their windows and doors closed.

A fire service spokesman said at its height, the heath was 'well alight', but it is now under control, with crews damping down hotspots.
