DanceEast in Ipswich announces return of YouthFest for third year
A free event designed to get young people interested in the medium of dance returns for its third year tomorrow.
DanceEast, on Ipswich Waterfront, has announced that its YouthFest will take place between 1pm and 5pm.
On offer are a series of activities including 45 minute yoga workshops, tasters into different dance styles and interactive sessions.
In addition, screenings of dance films will be shown and artwork will be displayed.
Millie Powell, a member of YouthFest’s planning team of four, hoped the event would create a greater community of dance lovers among young people.
She added: “We hope this festival brings all different types of people together.
“There will be something for everyone as well as a DJ who will be playing throughout the whole day if you just want to chill and listen to music.”
As part of the half-day’s events, Rebecca Pell Evans and Simon East will offer a ‘wearable interactive sound session’, set to explore how to make sound with movement.
In addition, there will be other events to get the creative juices flowing, such as movement drawing and sketching workshops, a stage costume dress-up corner and the chance to strut along a catwalk.
At the end of the day, the DJ will encourage everyone to hit the dancefloor.
The event is free to drop into without the need to buy tickets, DanceEast said.
Attendees do not need to be qualified dancers and the event is open to anyone interested in learning more about the medium.
The event is aimed at those aged 14 to 25.
Marni Cady-Heffer, another planner, said being part of it taught her vital administration, planning and management skills, while also allowing her to network better and build confidence in her ‘creative voice’.
She said: “I think what is amazing about this opportunity is that the festival is run and created by young people.
This, in turn, allows us young people to gain that experience in planning and executing a festival and be able to then transfer those skills onto whatever career is next.”
