Suffolk Rural College in Otley, near Ipswich, welcomes Fuzz Lightyear, a new baby alpaca

Students returning to a Suffolk college campus for the start of the new term were treated to a furry surprise earlier this week.

Suffolk Rural College, in Otley, welcomed a new baby alpaca on Monday, which staff named Fuzz Lightyear.

Both mother and baby are doing well, staff said, with the cria among thousands of new arrivals at the college as the Autumn term gets under way.

Andrew Waddingham, senior animal technician at Suffolk Rural, said they got the idea to name him Fuzz Lightyear after looking up alpaca names on the internet.

The name made them all smile, so they decided on it, he said.

Mr Waddingham added: “So far it has been going amazingly well. Fudge [his mum] is really attentive and this is what you want. She is also really patient when it comes to feeding.

“The variety [of animals] we have here is very varied and it means students can learn different methods of caring.

“The feedback from students in relation to Fuzz has been brilliant – it’s been a great way to start a new term.”

Fudge carried Fuzz for 11 months before giving birth.
