Ipswich former Burtons building in St Peter’s Wharf could become lounge and bar

A 100-year old former warehouse on Ipswich Waterfront could become a lounge and bar, creating up to 30 jobs

Bristol-based Loungers UK is seeking permission from Ipswich Borough Council to turn the former Burtons building in St Peter’s Wharf into a bar and café.

If approved, it would see the site of the confectionary site transformed into a leisure hub, serving food and alcohol.

A spokesman for Loungers UK said each lounge is designed to mesh with local customers, and could offer space to local charities.

As many as 30 new staff, ranging from managers to front-of-house, will be employed and trained.

The spokesman said leases on its lounges last for 15 years and ensure goods are of a high quality.

The Burtons building was once a key fixture for Ipswich waterfront.

Work to turn the vacant unit into a new leisure facility began in March.

Ipswich Borough Council said it would form a key part of the rejuvenation of the waterfront.

In addition to its lounges, Loungers UK also runs Cosy Club eateries.

The Ipswich chain is located in the Buttermarket Shopping Centre.

Pedestrian access to the Burtons site would remain from the waterfront.

No vehicle access will be added, planning documents stated.
