Ipswich Town away match at Peterborough United Weston Homes Stadium sees one man arrested after spitting at player Wes Burns
A man has been arrested on suspicion of assault after he spat at Ipswich Town player Wes Burns in their match against Peterborough United.
Peterborough United, Ipswich Town and Cambridgeshire Police confirmed the man was arrested at the Weston Homes Stadium after Ipswich Town scored the first goal of the game.
An Ipswich Town Football Club spokesperson said Burns was celebrating the goal in front of the home support when one fan ran down the terrace to the front and was caught on camera spitting at him.
He was then arrested during half time.
An Ipswich Town spokesperson said: “Peterborough couldn’t have dealt with the matter any better, they dealt with it swiftly, promptly and that’s the end of the matter in terms of the club.
“Obviously we don’t think it’s acceptable that supporters want to spit or get involved with players but we can’t thank Peterborough and the authorities more for how well they dealt with it, and that should be the end of the matter.”
A Peterborough United spokesperson said: “There is no place in the game for incidents like that. The club would like to thank the police for swiftly dealing with it.”
Cambridgeshire Police confirmed the man has been taken into custody on suspicion of assault.
