Ipswich man Mihaita Ciuraru jailed after attacking victim with long metal pole

An Ipswich man who attacked another with a long metal pole, causing serious injuries, has been jailed for more than three years.

Mihaita Ciuraru, 38 of St John's Road, was jailed for 40 months today after he pleaded guilty to wounding with intent.

This comes after a serious assault that took place on July 20 last year when, at around 6.30pm in Ipswich, the 44-year-old victim was attacked by Ciuraru.

The victim, a man known to Ciuraru, had visited the convenience shop on Stoke Bridge and walked out of the shop to walk home when he was attacked from behind.

Ciuraru was wielding a metre-long metal pole and the victim was hit twice on the head and on his body before his attacker dropped the pole and ran back over Stoke Bridge towards the town.

The victim suffered serious head injuries that required 12 stitches to the head and treatment in hospital.

Ciuraru was arrested on January 7 this year after initially fleeing the country to Germany, and was subsequently charged.

DC Jack Evans of Ipswich CID said: "This was an extremely aggressive and cowardly attack by Ciuraru on someone he knew.

"It was a busy time of day with vehicles driving past and numerous members of public witnessing the attack.

"I’d like to thank the members of the public who came to the victim’s aid at the time and who were willing to provide crucial evidence as witnesses."
