Police standoff in Butter Market, Ipswich: Man who climbed onto roof is detained after burglary

A man who climbed onto the roof of a town centre building after a burglary has been detained by police after an hours-long standoff.

The 49-year-old man has been detained and taken to hospital as a precaution after police, negotiators, the ambulance service and the fire service attended the incident in Butter Market.

Officers were called at about 4.35am today to reports of a burglary in progress at Carat’s Jewellers, after the alarm was set off.

Police were then told that a man had climbed onto the roof of the premises and was climbing over several other businesses.

Surrounding roads were cordoned off for public safety.

The cordon blocked off the north entrance to the Buttermarket Shopping Centre, leading to fears businesses could lose thousands of pounds in trade.

A police spokesperson said the situation was safely resolved shortly before 1.40pm and all road restrictions had been lifted.
