The A14 Orwell Bridge is still closed in both directions as police attend an incident.

Emergency crews rushed to the area at around 5.20pm and officers have closed both the westbound and eastbound carriageways.

People are currently being urged to avoid the area - and Highways England says traffic is unlikely to return to normal until after midnight.

Police have issued no update on the exact nature of the incident.

Earlier, eastbound traffic towards Felixstowe was backing up past the Copdock Interchange and westbound was held up as far as Seven Hills.

Highways England is classing the incident as 'severe' and predicting the road will not get back to normal until at least midnight.

The closures affected traffic leaving the Portman Road area of town after Ipswich Town's opening game of the season against Morecambe.

One concerned family member took to Twitter to question what was being done for those stuck in the queues.

Michelle Biggins, whose sister is stuck in the traffic holdups, said: "There is a duty of care to the people and families stuck without food and water.

"Decisions need to be made. My sister is stuck.

"I can understand the situation yet there are families trying to cope with hungry children and full bladders."
