Images from the scene of a field fire that took hold at East Bergholt yesterday show the extent of the damage.

Twelve crews from across Suffolk and Essex were called to the blaze, in Straight Road, which started at midday.

Group Manager Lee Wilkins said when crews arrived they were met with several acres of field on fire.

At one point the fire was moving towards residential properties and residents were told to keep their doors and windows closed.

"I am very pleased to say that the crews worked extremely hard and managed to stop the fire and prevent any spread to any of the residential premises," said Lee Wilkins.

He also asked Suffolk residents to avoid using bonfires and portable barbecues during this dry spell.

Some outbuildings and sheds were affected by fire but no one was harmed in the blaze.

Crews stayed on the scene to check for hotspots and make the area safe until 8.11pm.

Firefighters from Colchester, Ipswich East, Woodbridge, Princes Street, Holbrook, Felixstowe, Needham Market, Hadleigh, Nayland and Sudbury were at the scene.
