New Ipswich GP practice plans for former Tooks Bakery site at Bury Road and Old Norwich Road junction take a step further

Plans for a new GP surgery are taking a step forward as the council looks for Executive approval to tender for a Lead Consultant to manage construction.

The new building in north-west Ipswich will have 29 clinic rooms, 11 nurse rooms and a minor operating suite.

This will make the surgery, on the former Tooks Bakery site at the junction of Bury Road and Old Norwich Road, one of the largest GP surgeries in the town.

Ipswich Borough Council, who owns the land, is working with NHS Suffolk and North East Essex Integrated Care Board (ICB) and Cardinal Medical Practice (CMP) to deliver further access to healthcare in the area to support anticipated population growth in north Ipswich.

Full details of the planning application can be found here.

Councillor Martin Cook, Ipswich Borough Council Portfolio Holder for Major Capital Schemes, said: "This is such an important development for the people of north-west Ipswich, enabling Cardinal Medical Practice to deliver a wide range of services under one modern roof.

"Ipswich Borough Council and local NHS partners have worked very hard to drive this project, and we look forward to receiving tenders from contractors, as well as a lead design consultant, interested in seeing the building take shape ahead of building works in 2024," he added.

An update on the project will be discussed by Executive on 7 March.
