Suffolk Constabulary launch new ‘We Don’t Buy Crime’ initiative to stave of theft-related crimes and ‘put offenders out of business’

Police have launched a new initiative to stave off theft-related crimes and ‘put offenders out of business’.

Suffolk Constabulary’s new ‘We Don’t Buy Crime’ scheme will tackle ‘acquisitive crime’ where criminals profit, including burglary, theft, vehicle crime and robbery.

In targeted areas across West Suffolk, the project will help the force to visit and assist victims of burglary, distribute vehicle marking kits, hold engagement days and erect Smartwater signs.

It is hoped the new initiative will help victims of crime, and nearby residents in their areas, to protect their property.

Inspector Timothy Scott said: “Keeping Suffolk safe is at the heart of our work and we understand the impact these types of offences can have, on individuals, communities and businesses.

“Taken together, the ‘We Don’t buy Crime’ measures are designed to both deter criminal activity and reduce harm across our county.”

A £30,000 fund for the project received by West Suffolk Council has facilitated the purchase of 1500 Smartwater home kits, 2500 UV markers, 500 vehicle marking kits, and 150 RFID (Radio Frequency Identification Device) bicycle identification kits.

The grant was made possible by Safer Streets 5, a collaboration between the Home Office and Suffolk’s Police and Crime Commissioner Tim Passmore.

He said: “I am pleased to see the Safer Streets 5 funding making an impact in the west of the county.

“This funding will support victims of burglary and vehicle crime, and prevent others from become victims of these appalling crimes.”
