The Thomas Wolsey pub in Ipswich to once again rebrand as The Old Phone for Ed Sheeran’s Portman Road concerts

Following on from the success of its first iteration last month, an Ipswich pub is set to be ‘taken over’ by Ed Sheeran once again.

The Thomas Wolsey, in St Peter’s Street, will be transformed into The Old Phone pub for the second time on the weekend of July 11, 12 and 13.

The occasion will see it adorned with Sheeran memorabilia and new signs to coincide with the Framlingham-born superstar’s concerts at Portman Road stadium.

This follows The Thomas Wolsey becoming a Sheeran-themed pop-up pub last month to help market his most recent album.

Damon Jeffery, the pub’s landlord, said: “The whole experience has been amazing, quirky, really mind blowing.

“It’s exciting to once again offer people an opportunity to have Ed Sheeran even if they were not able to grab tickets to Portman Road.

“The whole thing has been great, not just for the pub, but for Ipswich as a whole – he really promotes and cares about the town.

“That weekend is going to be a little bonkers.”

Damon said he was keen to turn his pub into The Old Phone once again, approaching Mr Sheeran’s management for the opportunity.

The name of the pop-up pub is taken from the single of the same name.

Its offerings will remain largely the same as before, including pictures, memorabilia and a new menu featuring potato smileys and Tingly Ted’s, Mr Sheeran’s hot sauce brand.

However, an upstairs room will contain a gallery of Mr Sheeran’s surprise gig on May 4, attended by celebrities including Ipswich Town boss Kieran McKenna and comedian Omid Djalili.

There will also be limited edition coasters that anyone with a ticket to the Portman Road gigs can collect from the bar.

The Thomas Wolsey will stay open until 1am so the party can go on for longer.

Damon said: “Everything will be pink, we have bands playing throughout the weekend, we’ll be doing a giveaway for a local charity and we’ll even have an appearance from the top Ed Sheeran lookalike.

“We’re really looking forward to it.”
