East Bergholt fire: Fourteen appliances on the scene of 12-acre fire in the open near caravan park in Straight Road

Firefighters have been battling a large blaze in the open in East Bergholt, near Ipswich.

Fourteen appliances attended the fire in Straight Road after being called at 12.06pm, a spokesperson for Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service said.

The fire, which is near a caravan park, involved 12 acres of stubble grass and hedges that were well alight.

Suffolk fire and Rescue Service asked people to avoid the area if possible and close their windows and doors if they live nearby.

The spokesperson said: "Crews are using jets, beaters and hydrants to tackle the blaze. There are no reported casualties, but we have asked the police to consider implementing a road closure."

Two crews attended from across the border in Essex, five from Bury St Edmunds, one from Ipswich East, two from Princes Street, Ipswich, one from Holbrook, one from Needham Market, one from Nayland and one from Hadleigh.

At about 4.50pm, a spokesman said good progress had been made and the fire was surrounded.
