A140 between the A14, near Coddenham, and the A1120 will close to allow for transportation of second abnormal load between Ipswich Docks and Yaxley, near Eye

The transportation of an abnormal load through Suffolk will go-ahead next month after it was postponed.

Heavy haulage operator Allelys was due to move the 71-metre long load last month, but cancelled it due to operational issues.

Suffolk Highways has announced the 164-tonne transformer will move through the county on Sunday, October 6.

It is the second load to be transported by the firm after operational issues also affected the delivery of another transformer, which was postponed by a week and left Ipswich Docks on Sunday, August 18 instead of the planned move on Sunday, August 11.

The latest transport will depart Ipswich Docks at approximately 6am, heading to the Synchronous Condenser Plant in Yaxley, near Eye.

The convoy will follow a route on local roads to the A14 before joining the A140, near Coddenham.

As part of the transportation, the A140 will once again close from junction 51 of the A14 to the A1120, but access to smaller vehicles will be allowed from east to west and vice versa.

However, this will be subject to the position of the abnormal load at the time.

The closure will allow for the construction of a temporary overbridge in Brockford Street.

Once the load has passed the overbridge and the road is deemed safe for public use, the overbridge will be dismantled so that the A140 can be reopened.

Councillor Paul West, Suffolk County Council’s cabinet member for Ipswich, operational highways and flooding, said: “Whilst the restrictions and road closures are in place, road users are encouraged to avoid the area where possible to ensure disruption is kept to a minimum.”

Other restrictions will be in place, such as parking, weight limit and the suspension of double yellow lines along the route.

Derby Road, Tomline Road and the St Matthews Street subway in Ipswich will be closed.

There will also be parking restrictions in Old Norwich Road, in Ipswich, and Old Norwich Road, in Whitton, in the unlikely event that the move needs to spread over two weekends.

A rolling roadblock will be in place on the A14 eastbound about 10am and 10.30am.

The A140 will be closed at about 11am until 6pm but those timings may change.

The transformer will be escorted by Suffolk Police.
