Beeches Community Primary School, in Shakespeare Road, Ipswich, shut after overnight roof fire

A primary school has been closed on what should have been the first day of term after an overnight roof fire.

The Beeches Community Primary School, in Shakespeare Road, Ipswich, has been shut to allow for a safety assessment to take place.

It follows a roof fire involving solar panels, to which six engines were called at 9:43pm yesterday.

Firefighters used hose reel jets to tackle the blaze, which was brought under control just after 11pm.

In an online statement, the school added: “Further information will follow and we hope to be able to re-open the school as soon as possible.”

There are no reported injuries.

The extent of the damage is unclear.
