Ipswich work begins to build new play area at Chantry Park, with highlights including new music zone

A new music zone and a feature taller than a double-decker bus are just some of the new equipment coming to an Ipswich park as work begins today.

Ipswich Borough Council has confirmed that work to build a new play area at Chantry Park, as part of its £3.5 million Play Area Strategy, began today.

When complete, it is expected to feature 120 play items for children aged 14 and under including a music area inspired by iconic gigs, with bongos, guitar panels and springers.

Highlights include a wheelchair-accessible swing and carousel plus an ‘enchanted grove giants unit’, which is taller than a double-decker bus, the borough council said.

Other key features include a large tube slide, a ‘chill-out zone’ for teenagers, and a wide variety of sensory equipment at different heights.

As part of the play area, there will be two composting toilets featuring baby changing facilities.

Cllr Lucy Trenchard, from the borough council, welcomed the news.

She said: “I’m really excited that work is starting on this fantastic new play area.

“This is exactly the kind of provision that will enhance the enjoyment of Ipswich outdoors for young families – safe, enjoyable and modern equipment that children and young people of all abilities can use for fun and exercise.

“We’d like to thank local parents and caregivers for their support and involvement in the design process and we’ve taken onboard feedback regarding incorporating water play in the park.”

As part of the borough council’s Play Area Strategy, 40 parks will be upgraded by 2027.
