Work begins to breathe new life into Ipswich former Grimwades building ahead of Jamaica Blue moving in

Work has begun to breathe new life into an iconic building in Ipswich town centre to prepare for its first tenants in more than a decade.

Ipswich-based Bellcorp Ltd is set to start work rejuvenating the windows and roof of the former Grimwades building in the Cornhill.

SuffolkNews reported last week that café chain Jamaica Blue would be one of two tenants set to occupy the building – the first business based out of the building in 13 years.

This marked the first major development since Ipswich Borough Council came into ownership of the building last month.

Cllr Neil MacDonald, the borough council’s leader, said: “We’re delighted to see the works at the former Grimwades building already beginning, with construction starting on site today – while things are happening at a pace, the work is high quality and sensitive to the historic building.

“This is a further, significant step forward into bringing the building to life, to enhance a vibrant town centre and create jobs and spaces for local people and visitors to enjoy.”

Jamaica Blue is set to spend £300,000 on the move, which will create 20 jobs.

News of a second tenant for the site expected soon, the borough council said.

Liam Bell, managing director at Bellcorp said: “Bellcorp Ltd is extremely pleased to be working on this historic, landmark building on behalf of Ipswich Borough Council.”
