Ipswich Town Women celebrate East Anglian derby win over Norwich at Carrow Road
Ipswich Town Women are celebrating after putting four past rivals Norwich City in the East Anglian Derby.
Joe Sheehan’s side now progress through to the next round of the FAWNL Cup, following their commanding 4-0 victory at Carrow Road, last night.
It was the team’s first derby in four years with about 800 away fans making the trip to cheer them on in Norwich, making up a crowd of 4,751.
All four goals came in the second half, Summer Hughes breaking the deadlock after 63 minutes, with a strike from the edge of the area.
Prolific goal scorer Natasha Thomas doubled the score two minutes later, with an impressive headed goal.
In the 73rd minute Sophie Peskett broke through the Norwich defence before cutting back to Angela Addison - who scored off the underside of the crossbar.
Peskett was soon on the scoresheet herself, arrowing an effort into the top right corner in the 83rd minute.
Following the match Sheehan praised City, who play in the fourth tier of English women’s football, for their commitment - particularly in the first half.
Speaking about his team, who play in the tier above Norwich City, he said: “Fortunately when we got the breakthrough we kicked on from there.
“We knew if we kept persevering an opening would present itself and fortunately we could take it.”
On social media the Ipswich Town Women’s account posted highlights from the match which it described as ‘four-midable’.
The team also reflected on a ‘special night at Carrow Road’ thanking fans for their ‘fantastic support’.
Town will return to league action on Sunday, when they face Exeter away in the AWNL Southern Premier.
Norwich City play in the FA Women's National League Division One South East - the same league as AFC Sudbury.
