Ipswich Town column: Supporter Joey Sadler bids farewell to captain Sam Morsy as he closes in on a move away from Portman Road
Sam Morsy – where do I even start?
Many men have played their part in the renaissance of Ipswich Town, but none more so than you, skip.
You led us out during the dark times until we eventually saw the light. I don’t believe the success and rollercoaster ride we’ve all experienced these past few years happens without you.
Sam Morsy is everything you want from a captain – tough, strong and never backs out of a challenge. Respect is shown for Morsy from every player on the field, including those he’s up against. The tough, hard exterior also happens to be backed up with equally as impressive footballing ability, which is handy.
Whether it’s the quick turn, constant interceptions or the fact wherever you seem to be on the pitch, you’re always free to receive a pass. It’s been an absolute honour to watch you these past four years and an even bigger honour to have you as our captain.
When you joined the club in 2021 you were joining one of the worst Ipswich sides there’s ever been. The deal was huge at the time and you chose to move away from where you were settled and start a new life down here. Your presence changed everything and although the first year maybe didn’t go exactly how we wanted it, we always knew and believed you were the man to lead us forwards.
What followed after that was – as we all know – historic. Thinking now, it’s a bit of a joke how we managed to have you play in League One and I don’t remember you giving the ball away for what felt about three seasons!
I am absolutely gutted, as is every single other Ipswich fan. I think that’s the biggest compliment we can give you and I know growing up, thousands of supporters will always remember and be told about the name Sam Morsy.
I knew this day would come eventually, but personally I wasn’t ready for it yet. That said, I can understand the situation from both your’s and the club’s side and I wish you and your family all the best in your next venture.
More than 150 games, 11 goals and four years we’ve seen you lead the team out. It’s going to feel strange not seeing that anymore but from me and every single fan out there, thank you.
Thank you for being a great captain. Thank you for being a great player and most importantly, thank you for being a great human being and leading our football club in the most classiest of ways.
