Ipswich Town column: We might just have got away with one after Ewood Park wash out
The gods seem to be looking over Ipswich Town at the moment – quite literally. A last-minute penalty at Birmingham, the same at home to Derby and now we've potentially got out of jail at a waterpark in Blackburn. I am writing this column before the EFL have released any news on whether the fixture will be replayed or not, but here's my take on the situation.
Town were poor. I was really disappointed and despite the conditions I can't help but feel that even if it was bright and sunny, it would've been the same old slog for us.
The weather didn't help, obviously. But I can see why Blackburn fans would be outraged if this was to be rearranged in full, considering they were not only a goal up, but a man too.
That said, rules are rules and Town may just get away with it given the unpredictable nature of football and the fact we’ve already shown we can and have scored late goals this season.
I'll be honest, I do feel for Blackburn, but they need to be looked at for the state of that pitch. Ewood Park was the only professional ground in that part of the country to have a game abandoned and I can't imagine that would've happened at Portman Road.
I get their frustrations, but was enough done before and during the game to keep it on? I'm not sure.
That said, the longer it takes to make a decision, the more it worries me. Truthfully I don't know what they'll do in this situation, but I really hope we aren't asked to go all the way up there to play 10 minutes of football. That would be ridiculous.
We'll see what happens but I imagine Kieran McKenna will be focussed more on Portsmouth at home opposed to what happens with that.
It’s a game we need to win by the way. I was quite impressed with Pompey's showing down at Southampton in the south coast derby, but if we're serious about going anywhere this year, it's a game we have to win.
Speaking of derbies – it's not far away now, is it?! Yikes, not sure I'm ready.
