Ipswich Town column: What Sam Morsy has to do to eclipse Matt Holland’s captain legacy and why Jack Clarke should start against Aston Villa

As well as that, if I had to pick a man to score such a brilliant goal, it would’ve been the one who got it at Southampton.

What a captain Sam Morsy has been for Ipswich Town. I was so pleased to see him score his first Premier League goal - seeing him join the club to have scored in each of the top four divisions.

In my lifetime, Sam Morsy is the best the I’ve ever seen captain an Ipswich team. And it got me thinking, is he now on par, or even ahead of the last we skipper in the Premier League, Matt Holland?

I think it’s close. But Matt captained us back to the big time and Europe, so for now I’d say it’s still him.

However, Sam, one of the main reasons Ipswich rose again with back-to-back promotions, is not far away.

If we stay up this season, I think he goes ahead in that debate.

As for last Saturday at St Mary’s, it was a game we couldn’t lose.

Yes, a victory would’ve been wonderful, but the fashion in which we grabbed that late point would’ve no doubt wounded relegation rivals Southampton, which has to be a positive for us.

Now it’s on to Sunday and the visit of Aston Villa (2pm).

It wasn’t long ago this was a Championship fixture. Nowadays it’s the Champions League for Villa.

I think we need something here. Yes, on paper we won’t be expected too. But as I’ve said before, what we do at home will be the deciding factor between what league we’re playing in next season.

Who plays on Sunday? Kieran McKenna named an almost unchanged side for the Saints, but I could see changes this weekend.

For me, Kalvin Phillips comes back in, if fit, and the time has come for Jack Clarke to start as his cameos have been excellent.

I’d have him on that left forward spot in place of Szmodics as the goals haven’t flowed yet and I think Mr Clarke could change that.
