Ipswich Town are reportedly close to being in a position to announce former Morecambe left-back Greg Leigh as their third summer signing.

The 27-year-old current Jamaica international is understood to be at the Suffolk club now with the deal set to be confirmed later today, according to TWTD. The link to the player was first made earlier this morning by the EADT.

The Sale-born player, who came through the youth ranks at Manchester City, made 41 appearances (38 starts), scoring twice for Town's League One rivals Morecambe after signing a one-year deal with the Shrimps following his release from Aberdeen last summer.

England U19 capped Leigh left the Mazuma Stadium club at the end of last season meaning the player who has earned seven caps with Jamaica, having made his debut for the Reggae Boyz in November 2020, is available on a free transfer.

The market value of the player who joined Bradford City in the summer of 2015 on his release from Manchester City, where he did not make a senior appearance, is listed on website Transfermarkt.co.uk as £270,000.

Leigh, who can also operate as a left wing-back, went on to make just nine appearances for the Bantams in 2015/16 before joining Bury.

His time back in Greater Manchester was a successful one, making 100 appearances and scoring three goals for the Shakers before spending a season in the Dutch top flight with NAC Breda in 2018/19 before making a loan spell with Aberdeen into a permanent switch.

He was released from the Scottish club following suffering a serious hamstring injury at the end of 2020/21, before subsequently being snapped up by newly-promoted League One outfit Morecambe.

Leigh's signature would become the third new arrival in Kieran McKenn's squad, following on from striker Freddie Ladapo and defensive midfielder Dominic Ball, also both on free transfers.

Following the Blues not taking up an option to make Dominic Thompson's loan spell from Brentford into a permanent transfer along with releasing Myles Kenlock and Bailey Clements, Matt Penney is the current only natural option for the left full-back/wing-back role.

Meanwhile, the first-team squad reported back for their first day of pre-season training this morning with Saturday seeing the first of five announced warm-up matches, with Town taking on hosting Needham Market (1pm).
