Ipswich Town manager Kieran McKenna tips Jacob Greaves to improve after being impressed with start to life in the Premier League following Hull City switch

Ipswich Town manager Kieran McKenna is confident that ‘there’s a lot more to come’ from Jacob Greaves.

The centre-back joined the Tractor Boys during the summer for a deal believed to be worth in the region of £15m from his boyhood club Hull City.

After starting Town’s first seven games back in the Premier League, the 24-year-old then had to contend with a two-month spell on the sidelines nursing a hamstring injury.

However, Greaves has now regained his place back in the side having started seven of the previous eight league fixtures – a run that has also seen him score his first goal for the club during the 4-1 defeat at Liverpool.

And while McKenna has been impressed by how Greaves has adapted to life at a new club and at the highest level of the English game, he is also expecting to see plenty more improvement over the coming months.

McKenna, speaking ahead of tomorrow’s home game against Tottenham Hotspur, said: “There’s a lot more to come, there’s no doubt about it. You can definitely put him in the bracket of a few others that we’ve signed of a real high potential player.

“He’s got good Championship experience but he didn’t arrive with Premier League experience. He’s faced the challenge of trying to settle into a new club, which especially for a player coming from his hometown club, is even bigger. He had one loan move but to just settle into a new environment, a new dressing room in a new part of the country is a big challenge.

“To then settle in from a football perspective, the style of play and all of those details to pick up – and then to settle into the Premier League level and the toughest league in the world, it’s a big challenge and I think he’s acquitted himself well.

“He started the season well and he had pre-season with us, which I’ve said before has helped. It was disappointing to get the injury and he had to work his way back from that, which again is a new thing for him –he hasn’t missed many games.

“It took him a little while to find his feet again and Cameron (Burgess) did well with his opportunity so he had to wait and be a supportive team-mate.

“He’s played quite a few games lately and he’s competing well. He’s shown some good attributes and I still feel that there’s loads and loads to come. In every area of the game I think he’ll be better in three months, six months and 12 months.

“He just needs to keep working in the right way, keep working to improve. For his first season in the Premier League he’s on a pretty good path.”
