Ipswich Town manager proud of the performance from his side in 2-2 draw at Sheffield Wednesday
Kieran McKenna believes his Ipswich Town side will learn from the mistakes made in letting a two-goal lead slip to draw 2-2 at Sheffield Wednesday.
The Sky Bet League One leaders were on course for victory at Hillsborough, after Kayden Jackson's fourth-minute goal had been followed up with an own goal from Dominic Iorfa on 71 minutes.
But the Owls rescued a point as George Byers and Michael Smith both found the target in the final 15 minutes, with Smith netting the equaliser one minute from time.
Despite seeing their 2-0 lead disappear, the Tractor Boys still lead the way at the top of League One on goal difference, and manager McKenna, although disappointed, was proud of the performance from his unbeaten side.
"The overriding emotion at the moment is disappointment because at 2-0 it was such a good performance," McKenna told BBC Radio Suffolk in his post-match interview.
"We executed the game plan so well, did almost everything we wanted to do in the game, and from there you obviously feel like you deserve and want to go on and win it.
"The game changed on a set play. Obviously we can do better in terms of not giving it away and defending it, and from there it was always going to be a difficult last 20 minutes.
"There's pride there in the performance. Pride in individually and how as a team we competed in the game.
"There's disappointment of course of the lead slipping, but it's football, it can happen, especially in stadium's like this.
"We have to learn from it and I'm sure we will because the boys are getting better and better. We just need to keep learning and improving."
On a day which saw the current top four sides in League One face off against each other, Portsmouth rescued a point thanks to substitute Reeco Hackett-Fairchild's 90th minute goal, which earned them a 2-2 draw at home to Plymouth Argyle.
Wednesday's late strike denied Ipswich from opening up a points lead at the top of the table, with only a superior goal difference keeping the Tractor Boys ahead of Portsmouth.
McKenna's side, along with Portsmouth, are still the only two sides that remain unbeaten in League One, and a point away at Wednesday, who boasted the best home record in the division last season, continues their strong start to the new campaign.
"We certainly had the intent to play for the win, but it's a very tough place to go," the Ipswich boss said.
"Their home record is fantastic. They're an excellent team. They have fantastic players and it's a really tough place to come and play.
"Of course a draw is not a bad result at the start of the day, but from 2-0 up and having done so many things so well we feel like we could have got the win that I think we would have deserved."
