Brentford vs Ipswich Town: Jens Cajuste could return to Kieran McKenna’s squad but Premier League fixture too soon for Ben Johnson, Jacob Greaves and Axel Tuanzebe

Jens Cajuste has a chance of playing some part in Ipswich Town’s Premier League game at Brentford this weekend but Jacob Greaves and Ben Johnson are set to miss it along with Axel Tuanzebe, boss Kieran McKenna has revealed.

Sweden international midfielder Cajuste, who has played Champions League football for Danish side Midtjylland, joined the Suffolk side on a season-long loan from Italian Seria A outfit Napoli following the Blues’ opening-day home defeat to Liverpool.

The 25-year-old has only played in two of the seven games that have followed with a knee injury having seen him not included in any of the last three Premier League squads, to face Aston Villa, West Ham United and Everton.

But at today’s pre-match press conference ahead of travelling to west London to face Thomas Frank’s Bees, McKenna revealed the primarily defensive central midfielder could come back into the picture, while centre-back Jacob Greaves (hamstring) and Ben Johnson (thigh) looks to still be unavailable along with long-term washing up injury victim Axel Tuanzebe (thumb).

“None of them will come into the picture this weekend, there won’t be anyone, off the top of my head, new into the picture who wasn’t available for Everton, and we’ve got a few other issues we have to assess over the next 48 hours going into Saturday,” McKenna said.

Realising his error on dismissing Cajuste’s availability when quizzed on him and Johnson, he said: “Sorry, Jens has trained in the last two days so we’ll have to make a judgment tomorrow as to whether he can be involved in the game and for how long. Ben Johnson is still out.”

He later added on full-back Johnson, who was a surprise omission from the Everton squad in last Saturday’s 2-0 home defeat: “He’s got a small thigh injury. There was a possibility he could have made it for this weekend but he’s not been able to make it. We’ll have to see how he is next week.”

Regarding how long it could be before defender Tuanzebe, who had started the season well at right-back with Harry Clarke returning from achilles surgery over the summer, he said of his thumb issue: “It’s still rough, to be honest. He won’t be back before this international break (November 11-19 is thr third break), other than that, he’s seeing specialists and seeing what type of casts can be fitted and when it will be suitable. It won’t be before Tottenham, certainly.”

Town travel to north London for the last game before the Premier League’s third of four international breaks on Sunday, November 10 (2pm) – following the fixture being moved from the Saturday for TV selection.

It means Tuanzebe’s next available opportunity to return to competitive action would therefore be the trip to his and his manager’s former club, Manchester United, on Sunday, November 24 (4.30pm) which will also be shown live on Sky Sports.

Town head to Brentford’s Gtech Community Stadium as one of four sides yet to taste a victory in the Premier League this season with four draws and four defeats having left the newly-promoted side one place and one point outside fo the relegation side.

Their opponents on Saturday are 13trh in the table with three wins from eight matches and one draw to leave them six points better off then Town.
