Ipswich Town Women make Sophie Peskett the team's first ever professional footballer

Ipswich Town Women have signed on the first professional player in their history.

Sophie Peskett is the player in question, with the 18-year-old having put pen to paper on a two-year deal at Portman Road.

The England Under-19 international joined the Tractor Girls in 2019 and has gone on to become a key member of the squad.

Her return of 16 goals in 26 appearances had captured the attention of clubs in the Women's Super League, but she has rejected that interest to stay with Ipswich.

The winger told the club's website: "It was a no-brainer for me really to sign a contract here.

"I was a bit shocked at first, being the first to be offered a pro contract, but it’s an amazing feeling to get it done.

"The support I’ve had here, the opportunities I’ve had, it was easy to commit my future to Ipswich and it shows the intent of the club that we are signing players now on pro contracts. I just can’t wait for the season to start."
