Ipswich Town: Harry Clarke’s own goal against Brentford credited to Yoane Wissa by Premier League
The Premier League has announced that an Ipswich Town defender’s own goal has been officially credited to a Brentford attacker.
Harry Clarke attempted to block Yoane Wissa’s shot on goal just before half-time but was unable to stop the ball ending up in the back of the net as the Bees went on to win the game 4-3 at the Gtech Community Stadium.
Following an appeal by the hosts, the Premier League’s Goal Accreditation Appeals Panel reviewed the incident and awarded it to Wissa, who was making his first start since he was injured against Manchester City in September.
On Saturday evening, Match of the Day presenter Gary Lineker said that the goal should be given to the Bees attacker.
“We must give that goal to Wissa. It’s ridiculous it’s been taken away from him.”
He added: “I don’t know who it is that decides who scores or not, but come on, Wissa, it’s his goal.
“Nobody wants to score a goal, he (Wissa) wants to score it. Do the right thing.”
Clarke also conceded a penalty and was red carded in what was his full Premier League debut.
The successful Brentford appeal means the 23-year-old avoids becoming the second player in Premier League history to score an own goal, concede a penalty and be sent off in the same match, after Southampton’s Jan Bednarek against Manchester United in February 2021.
Clarke will be suspended for Saturday’s home game against Leicester following his dismissal in the 69th minute.
