Ipswich Town made to settle for a point against MK Dons despite twice taking the lead through Macauley Bonne

Despite twice taking the lead against MK Dons at Portman Road this afternoon Ipswich Town's wait for a win in the 2021/22 Sky Bet League One season goes on, following a 2-2 draw.

Macauley Bonne, who had been ridiculed by clips of his embarrassing miss at Cheltenham Town in midweek being aired and shared on social media, gave the perfect reply with a stunning 16th minute opener.

After Scott Twine's 59th minute free-kick eventually levelled the scores, locally-raised QPR loanee Bonne converted a Scott Fraser cross to restore the Blues' lead 18 minutes from time.

But, like against Morecambe on the opening day, Paul Cook's side shot themselves in the foot again as captain Lee Evans had his pocket picked, leading to Matt O'Riley firing in a 75th minute equaliser.

The Dons then hit the crossbar through substitute Josh Martin in stoppage-time before having to accept a share of the spoils.

A second home draw, following back-to-back away defeats, leaves The Tractor Boys with just two points from four games and already eight points afrift of the automatic promotion places ahead of a full week on the training ground.

Cook made three changes to the XI which started Tuesday's 2-1 defeat at Cheltenham Town with the full-back spots getting freshened up. Kane Vincent-Young returned on the right in place of Janoi Donacien while Middlesbrough loanee Hayden Coulson came in for his Town debut on the left with Matt Penney dropping to the bench.

Winger Wes Burns was the third change, returning from injury with striker Joe Pigott dropping to the bench as the Blues boss reverted to one striker in his preferred 4-2-3-1 formation.

MK Dons went into the game off the back of an encouraging opening couple of games under their new management. Former Town player and youth coach Liam Manning, assisted by ex-Blues academy coach Chris Hogg in the wake of Russell Martin, earned a 2-1 victory at home to Charlton Athletic on Tuesday off the back of a narrow defeat at Sunderland.

Spurs' former Ipswich loanee Troy Parrott was leading the attack for the visitors.

The Dons demonstrated their patient passing build-up from the off and created the first chance, but Scott Twine's third-minute effort from outside the area was straight at Vaclav Hladky.

Town, who had summer signing Fraser operating in his natural position behind the striker for the first time, first threatened in the 14th minute when Bonne's header from Burns' cross was deflected over the crossbar.

But less than two minutes later the QPR loannee was celebrating opening the scoring in fine style.

Town gained possession of an MK throw-in in their own defensive third and Vincent-Young pinged a wonderful crossfield ball to pick out Bonne's run. The Ipswich-born player used a cushioned touch to get him into the penalty area before blasting a left-footed shot into the roof of the net from an angle.

Parrott was found clear in the box in the 22nd minute but could only lift his shot well over the bar as the visitors looked to draw level.

And they went within a lick of paint of doing so five minutes later as Ethan Robson's shot from the edge of the area from a swift counter from a Town corner clipped the top of the crossbar on its way over.

A deep free-kick from Fraser almost doubled the hosts' lead as it bounced in front of Fisher dangerously before he pushed it round his right-hand post.

Winger Kyle Edwards was proving to be a real handful and sent over the angle of post and bar after a strong run before having an effort blocked in the area by Harry Darling as Town ended the half strongly.

Cook's side picked up where they left off in the second half with Edwards' trickery ending with another ball flashing across the box before Fraser laid off to Bonne in the area with his shot deflected just wide.

Burns won the ball high up the pitch in the 53rd minute before seeing his low effort come back off the left-hand post via a good touch from Fisher.

But a failure to take those chances proved costly as Twine's 25-yard central free-kick, following a Luke Woolfenden foul, beat Hladky at his right-hand post just before the hour mark.

Twine then went close to giving the visitors the lead as a long-range shot was turned round his near post by Hldaky.

Bonne got Town back ahead in the 71st minute though as he was on hand to slide in Fraser's wonderful low ball at the far post following an incisive pass from substitute Matt Penney.

It was not to last long though as within three minutes Blues captain Evans was caught in possession on the edge of the area and O'Riley ran through before firing into the unguarded net.

Twine went close was an audacious long-range effort after spotting Hladky off his line while up the other end a breathless second half continued with Bonne forcing a near post save from Fisher.

It was the away side, who had been impressively on top for large spells of the second half, who went closest to finding a winner in stoppage-time. Norwich City loaneee Josh Martin saw his angled effort from inside the area come back off the crossbar to leave both sides with a point.
