Ipswich Town sign goalkeeper Alex Palmer from West Brom for £2 million plus add-ons

Ipswich Town have completed the signing of Alex Palmer from West Bromwich Albion on a three-and-a-half year contract for a fee understood to be worth £2 million plus add-ons.

The 28-year-old goalkeeper, a product of the Baggies’ academy, only emerged as a target for the Blues on deadline day off the back of the news being revealed at the weekend that Christian Walton is facing a spell on the sidelines with ‘a fairly significant’ groin strain.

Kosovo international Aro Muric - signed from relegated Bunrley in the summer for £8m plus £2m add-ons - had come back into the starting line-up against Southampton but had another shaky display in the 2-1 home defeat to the Premier League’s basement side.

Palmer, who has made 104 starts for West Brom, having been at the club since the age of 14, and jointly won the Sky Bet Championship Golden Glove last season with 18 clean sheets alongside Illan Meslier of Leeds, told Town TV: “It’s an exciting time for me and I am ready to embrace a new challenge.

“I’ve come here with one aim and that’s to help the club.”

The Kidderminster-born shot-stopper, who has had loan spells with his hometown club as well as Plymouth Argyle and Lincoln City, has secured 11 shutouts in 30 league appearances this season to help The Hawthorns club into the play-off positions.

Palmer, who will wear the number 31 shirt, becomes the fourth addition to Kieran McKenna’s squad in the winter window, following on from defender Ben Godfrey on loan from Italian side Atalanta, winger Jaden Philogene from Aston Villa for £20 million and forward Julio Enciso on loan from Brighton & Hove Albion.

Having not appeared in the Emirates FA Cup for the midlands club this season, he is available to make his Town debut away to Frank Lampard’s Coventry City on Saturday (3pm).
