Ipswich Town sign defender Jacob Greaves from Hull City for reported £15 million fee

Ipswich Town have confirmed the arrival of award-winning defender Jacob Greaves as their third summer signing.

The 23-year-old has signed a five-year deal after completing a transfer from Hull City for an undisclosed fee, reported to be £15 million with add-ons worth a further £3 million.

The left-sided central defender, who had also been linked with fellow Premier League clubs Tottenham and Everton, is set to join his new team-mates in heading out to a pre-season camp in Austria this weekend.

Greaves, who has made more than 170 appearances for Hull after coming through their youth ranks, was named in the Championship Team of the Season last term and also won his club’s Player of the Year award in 2023/24.

Town boss Kieran McKenna said: “We are delighted to have brought Jacob to the club and are excited to have him as part of the squad.

“He is a very talented, technical and athletic left-sided defender who has performed very well in the Championship and is ready to make the step up to the Premier League at this point in his career.

“We feel this is the right environment and club for him to do that in and he is a good character who will bring qualities to the group and culture we have built here.”

Greaves, the son of former Hull City and York City defender Mark Greaves who made his league debut for Hull in October 2020, told Town TV: “I’m absolutely delighted to have signed.

“As soon as I heard about the interest I was keen to get the move over the line. Now that it’s done I am really happy.

“I’ve spoken to the Kieran several times and those conversations have made me very excited for the future here. We spoke about tactics, playing style and life off the pitch and every time we’ve spoken it’s been spot on.”

The player who had a loan spell with Cheltenham Town in the 2019/20 season added: “I’m excited to have the opportunity to step up to the Premier League and I cannot wait to get started.”

He joins winger or attacking midfielder Omari Hutchinson (Chelsea) and full-back Ben Johnson (West Ham) in choosing Suffolk as his next destination this summer.
