Gwion Edwards opts to leave Ipswich Town to sign for League One rival Wigan Athletic

Gwion Edwards is set to be lining up against Ipswich Town for Sky Bet League One rivals Wigan Athletic in the 2021/22 campaign after agreeing a switch to the DW Stadium.

The 28-year-old winger is out of contract at the end of this month, but turned down a new deal to stay at his parent club. He will make the move as a free agent on July 1, having signed a two-year contract at the Lancashire club.

It brings to an end a three-year spell at Portman Road, having been signed from Peterborough United in July 2018 under Paul Hurst for a fee believed to be around £700,000.

Former Wales Under-21 international Edwards, who started his career in Sawnsea City's youth system before a spell at Crawley Town ahead of joining The Posh, made 96 league outings for Town, scoring 14 goals (109 apps and 14 goals in all competitions).

In the season just gone he made 40 appearances across all competitions, scoring six goals and providing four assists.

A club statement said: "We thank Gwion for his efforts in a Town shirt, and wish him the very best of luck for the future."

The Welshman completed his medical in the north west today and his departure from the Suffolk club makes him the eighth, with seven others having not been offered new contracts.

Edwards posted on his Twitter account: "Delighted to have signed for @LaticsOfficial

"They were a club that pursued me throughout the summer. Very excited for the season and the challenge ahead to get us back to the championship. Can’t wait to get started!"
