Ipswich Town captain Sam Morsy wins ITFC Supporters Club’s Men’s Player of the Year award

Ipswich Town captain Sam Morsy topped the vote to be named the ITFC Supporters Club’s Men’s Player of the Year with manager Kieran McKenna describing him as a ‘deserved winner’.

Morsy was presented with the trophy on the pitch following the Blues’ 1-1 draw with his former club Middlesbrough at Portman Road yesterday.

The 32-year-old Egypt international has started 39 of Town’s 41 Sky Bet Championship games – missing three through suspension – and scoring three goals as McKenna’s side have mounted a title challenge in their first season since promotion.

And the Town boss, who won the Irene Davey Patron Award – named after the long-serving supporters club patron who died earlier this year – said his captain was a deserved winner of the Harwich Rosebowl trophy.

“He has (been so consistent). I think a deserved winner,” he said.

“There have been so many of the boys who have stepped up very well but I think Samy’s shown great leadership again on the pitch and at the training ground.

“But on top of that, the quality of his performances, the way that he’s dictating games on and off the ball, the details in his game now that weren’t there two years ago that he’s worked ever so hard on and the fitness to be available for so many games, he’s another one that’s just done the five 90 minutes back-to-back. Testament to him and well deserved.”

Wes Burns won the newly-established Portman Road Moment of the Season award for his stunning outside-of-the-foot finish against Coventry City. The Welsh international’s goal came at the end of a fine team move and ultimately made the difference in a 2-1 victory over the Sky Blues.

The Unforgettable Moment was awarded to Jeremy Sarmiento following the Brighton & Hove Albion loanee’s 97th-minute winner against promotion rivals Southampton on Easter Monday.

Prior to the game Sophie Peskett carried off the Women’s Player of the Year and Under-21s captain Finley Barbrook won the Academy Player of the Year.
