Ipswich Town supporting Aro Muric after goalkeeper claims he was unfairly expelled from Kosovo national team for alleged nightclub outing
Ipswich Town have adopted a supportive approach towards number one goalkeeper Aro Muric after he was sent home from the Kosovo squad early – along with two team-mates – for a breach of rules which he claimed was ‘unfair’.
Manager Kieran McKenna said he had ‘no problem’ with the situation with his reported £8 million summer signing from Manchester City when speaking at today’s pre-match press conference ahead of Saturday’s return to Premier League action at in-form Brighton & Hove Albion (3pm).
The FKK, the Kosovan FA, announced on Sunday that Muric, Edon Zhegrova and Florent Muslija had been dismissed from the squad before Monday’s game against Cyprus for breaking the rules they and manager Franco Foda had set.
According to various reports, the FKK took the action after the trio allegedly stayed out too late in night clubs, not for the first time.
However, Muric, who missed Town’s opening Premier League game against Liverpool through injury but played against both Manchester City and Fulham, disputed that version of events to newspaper Klan Kosova, saying their expulsion was ‘not fair at all and the rumours that are circulating are not true at all’.
And asked about the situation, McKenna said he had no problem with what his goalkeeper had told him had happened and indicated the club will continue to support him ahead of the FFK executive committee deciding if any further action is to be taken against the trio.
“I’ve had a conversation with him. Of course, it’s not my area really, or Ipswich Town’s area to clear it up,” he said.
“I’ve had a conversation with Aro, he’s given me his version, which I think, as he’s said, is a little bit different than some of the rumours that I think there were.
“I’ve got no problem with his version and he’s our player and we support him.
“It was good to have him back this week for the couple of days’ extra training and we’re looking to keep working on his integration into the team, and I’m sure he’s going to be an important player for us.”
It comes off the back of a week which has seen the club announce a two-year contract extension for fellow keeper Christian Walton, who deputised for Muric after his injury came to light in the build-up to the Liverpool match.
Meanwhile, McKenna also provided good news on the health of his squad with all members now back in training and a trio declared as available for the trip to Brighton.
The Suffolk side travel down to Sussex looking to add to their first point of the campaign, garnered in the 1-1 home draw with Fulham at Portman Road ahead of the international break.
