Ipswich Town’s Chelsea loan star Omari Hutchinson wins Championship February Player of the Month
Ipswich Town loanee Omari Hutchinson has won the Sky Bet Championship Player of the Month for February.
The 20-year-old Chelsea player was picked after enjoying a fantastic month of cameo displays which saw the winger or attacking midfielder either score or provide an assist in five consecutive games of the six played.
He memorably came up with three crucial injury-time goals, to secure a draw against West Bromwich Albion, and to net three points against Rotherham United and Birmingham City, all at Portman Road.
The two-time Jamaica-capped player, who polled more than 75 per cent of the supporters’ poll to win the Town’s Player of the Month for February, sponsored by Greene King, also set up a goal in the away victories at Millwall and Swansea.
Hutchinson was picked out by a judging panel comprising of Sky Sports’ EFL expert Don Goodman; EFL chief executive Trevor Birch and Sky Bet EFL trader Ivor Davies.
He beat off competition from Leeds United midfielder Ilya Gruev, Josh Sargent of Norwich City and Sheffield Wednesday striker Ike Ugbo.
Hutchinson said: “I’m very happy, this is my first award in men’s football so I’m grateful.
“There’s a lot of players that could have won it, a lot of top talent but I was happy to be
chosen.
“Everyone has helped me on the journey, this is my first season in men’s football, so I didn’t
know what to expect, I think this season so far has been successful and to be playing in front
of the Ipswich fans week in and week out is a dream come true.”
Pundit Goodman said:
Goodman said: “When a young player on the fringes of a Premier League club goes on loan to a club in the Championship, it presents the perfect opportunity to show what they’re made of.
“In February, Omari Hutchinson grabbed his opportunity; his contribution keeping Ipswich’s
automatic promotion dream alive with a goal or an assist in five of the six matches he played a
part in.”
Meanwhile, the The Sky Bet Championship Manager of the Month was won by Leeds’ Daniel Farke.
