Ipswich Town winger Wes Burns withdraws from Wales squad after injury picked up against Sheffield Wednesday
Ipswich Town winger Wes Burns has withdrawn from Wales’ squad with a hamstring injury ahead of their Euro 2024 play-off fixture against Finland on Thursday.
The 29-year-old was forced off in the 38th minute of Town’s 6-0 drubbing of Sheffield Wednesday at Portman Road on Saturday, after he set up Omari Hutchinson’s goal that broke the deadlock 15 minutes into the contest.
Speaking after the Blues’ 24th win of the campaign, boss Kieran McKenna said: “It doesn’t look great, it’s a hamstring. It doesn’t look like a minor one, I don’t think it feels like a minor one.
“Of course, we’ll scan it over the next few days and assess it, but that’s the undoubted low point.
“Everyone’s gutted for Wes down in the dressing room and we just have our fingers crossed that the severity isn’t as bad as it possibly could be.”
Burns would have been hoping to link up with fellow Town players Kieffer Moore and Nathan Broadhead in Rob Pages’ squad as Wales look to progress past Finland in Cardiff to set up a tie with Poland or Estonia five days later, for a spot in this summer’s Euros.
Meanwhile, Cameron Burgess has joined Australia’s squad for their upcoming FIFA World Cup 2026 qualifiers against Lebanon. The games will take place tomorrow and on Tuesday.
Also, Jeremy Sarmiento has been called up to Ecuador’s squad for friendlies against Guatemala on Friday and Italy on Sunday.
