Ipswich Town Women wrap up FAWNL Southern Premier Division title and promotion to Women’s Championship after 8-0 win over Cheltenham Town at Felixstowe

Following the pain of yesterday’s Premier League relegation, there was something to celebrate for Ipswich Town this afternoon after their women’s team secured the FAWNL Southern Premier Division title.

The Tractor Girls headed into today’s season-ending encounter against Cheltenham Town at the Martello Ground all but certain of the silverware – as well as promotion for the first time to the Women’s Championship.

They held a three-point advantage over second-placed Hashtag United, while their goal difference was superior by 36.

As it was, they completed the job in style with an 8-0 victory over their visitors in the Felixstowe sunshine.

Natasha Thomas did plenty of damage as she helped herself to a hat-trick alongside further goals from Lucy O’Brien, Ella Rutherford, Sophia Peskett, Ruby Seaby and Kaci-Jai Bonwick.

Speaking prior to the game, manager Joe Sheehan reflected on his side’s journey in recent years.

It was not so long ago that Ipswich were playing in front of a crowd of 40 people, whereas today’s triumph was watched by more than 2,000 supporters.

“I have spent a little bit of time thinking about that journey because it’s been an incredible journey,” he said.

“There have been lots of people and players and staff that have made such a huge contribution that are no longer part of this experience, but we certainly spare a thought for them and I have had some good conversations with people who have wished us well going into this weekend.

“It’s been incredible. There have been so many things that I’ll probably think about after this weekend that I can’t think about at this moment. It’s been incredible, the growth, the success, the development of the group, of the club, of the staff. The experiences that we’ve had along the way have just been absolutely remarkable.”
