Championship play-off semi-finalists Barnsley reportedly set to bid for Ipswich Town homegrown star Flynn Downes

Barnsley are reportedly set to launch a bid to sign Ipswich Town's homegrown star Flynn Downes, with Paul Cook said to be happy to let the 21-year-old leave Portman Road.

Downes has another year left on his contract at The Tractor Boys and was the subject of rejected bids from Premier League Crystal Palace ahead of last season kicking off.

But a move to the Championship with defeated play-off semi-finalists Barnsley could be on the cards for the England Under-20-capped midfielder this summer, according to a report from Football Insider.

Valérien Ismaël's scouts are said to have been impressed by Downes' performances and want to bring him to Oakwell as they look to repeat a surprising run into the top six in 2021/22.

The report also says Downes is one of the players Cook reportedly told could find themselves new clubs this summer, having been unhappy with the performance of the squad he inherited.

After coming back from an early-season injury, Downes made 24 League One appearances, seven from the substitutes bench in 2020/21.

Website Transfrmarket rates him as being worth £810,000 and lists Town as having an option for a further year's extension on his contract.
