Ipswich Town reportedly miss out on Preston North End striker Jayden Stockley as Charlton Athletic set to beat Portsmouth to his signature
Preston North End striker Jayden Stockley was reportedly wanted by Ipswich Town boss Paul Cook this summer but the 27-year-old looks set to be lining up against them as he closes in on a move for a Sky Bet League One rival.
The availability of the hard-working physical forward who came through the ranks at AFC Bournemouth reportedly sparked a race for his signature from Town, Sheffield Wednesday, Charlton Athletic and Portsmouth.
A recruitment source told Football Insider the former Exeter City man had reached an agreement with Pompey on what was said to be a £450,000 transfer.
But the Portsmouth News is reporting he is set to turn down the terms offered to sign for Danny Cowley's team to make last season's loan spell at Nigel Adkins' Charlton Athletic permanent.
Stockley netted eight times for the Addicks in 22 League One appearances in the back half of the 2021/22 campaign.
He had signed for Championship outfit Preston for a reported £750,000 fee in January 2019 from Exeter, where he scored an impressive 49 goals in 98 appearances in all competitions.
Stockley found the back of the net eight times in 71 appearances for North End.
Ipswich Town are set to be close to announcing their third signing of the summer, West Bromwich Albion's former England youth international midfielder Rakeem Harper.
Midfielder Lee Evans and versatile right-sided player Wes Burns are both confirmed transfers announced last week.
