Ipswich Town reported to be set for 'ambitious' loan bid for Birmingham City striker Sam Cosgrove

Ipswich Town are reportedly keen on bringing Birmingham City striker Sam Cosgrove to Portman Road on loan.

The move for the former Aberdeen hotshot – who commanded a reported £2 million fee in January after scoring 47 goals in 85 starts and 18 substitute appearances north of the border – is described as 'ambitious' by The Sun on Sunday.

Although the 24-year-old is said to be set for a loan spell after not scoring in his first 12 appearances (two starts) for Birmingham, the reports says Town will have to wait to see if there is Championship interest.

The Yorkshire-born player began his senior career at Wigan Athletic after joining the Latics as a 16-year-old from Everton. But he moved on to Carlisle United a few years later, just prior to current Town boss Paul Cook being appointed manager, having only made a substitute appearance in the Carabao Cup. He had spent time on loan with several non-league clubs.

Cosgrove made eight League Town appearances scoring one goal in his half season with Carlisle before being taken to the Scottish Premiership in January 2018.

After a successful spell at the Pittodrie club he signed a three-and-a-half year contract with Birmingham on January 31 this year.

But his first-team opportunities with ex-Town player Lee Bowyer's side proved to be limited.

Cook already has James Norwood, Ollie Hawkins and Aaron Drinan as candidates to fill his preferred lone striker role in a 4-2-3-1 formation in his existing squad.

Freddie Sears, who is being released, has agreed to sign for Colchester United.
