Ipswich Town set to lose out to Middlesbrough in battle to sign Rotherham United midfielder Matt Crooks

Ipswich Town are reportedly on the verge of losing out in the race to sign Matt Crooks to a Championship club.

The Tractor Boys are believed to have made two bids for the midfielder in recent weeks, both of which have been rejected by Rotherham United.

But despite having since signed Scott Fraser, who plays in a similar position to Crooks, it is believed Ipswich's interest in the 27-year-old remained strong.

However, according to Football League World, the former Northampton Town man is close to linking up with Middlesbrough.

The report adds that Crooks is due to travel to Teeside today to undergo a medical and finalise the remaining details of the transfer.

Speaking to the Rotherham Advertiser last week, Millers manager Paul Warne suggested that second-tier football was Crooks' ambition: “I spoke to the Ipswich manager last week. He candidly asked ‘What did I think?’, I candidly told him what I thought and they haven’t offered again.

“It is not something we’re looking to do, to lose our best assets to our competitors.

“I think, in fairness to the player and with no disrespect to Ipswich, if he was to leave here he would want Championship football. That’s what his ability deserves really.”
