Transfer Talk: Ipswich Town set to match club transfer record with £20m deal to sign Aston Villa attacker Jaden Philogene
Widespread reports have claimed that Ipswich Town are closing in on their second signing of the January transfer window – and they are set to match their transfer record in the process.
Following the conclusion of Sunday’s 2-2 draw with Fulham, the Tractor Boys announced that they had secured the loan services of former Norwich City defender Ben Godfrey from Italian side Atalanta.
And according to numerous outlets, winger Jaden Philogene will finalise a permanent switch from Aston Villa later today.
It has been suggested that Ipswich have agreed a fee with Villa for the England Under-21 international in the region of £20m plus add-ons – the same figure club-record fee that they parted with to bring Omari Hutchinson to the club from Chelsea in the summer.
Everton were also said to be keen to sign the 22-year-old on loan this month, but the Tractor Boys’ determination to seal a permanent deal, as opposed to a loan switch, saw them move ahead in the race over the weekend.
Philogene is now believed to have travelled to Suffolk last night to undergo a medical and complete the final details of the move.
For Town boss Kieran McKenna it will be a case of finally getting his man having had an offer accepted in the summer when Philogene was leaving Championship outfit Hull City. However, Villa duly exercised their matching rights clause in the deal that took Philogene to Hull 12 months earlier and he returned to Villa Park for £13m.
But having made just two Premier League starts, Philogene now looks to be preparing to leave Villa for a second time.
