Dismay after play area at Kesgrave Community and Conference Centre targeted by vandals
A council expressed dismay after vandals caused thousands of pounds of damage to a children’s play area.
Kesgrave Town Council said a slide in the play area near the town’s community centre in Twelve Acre Approach was ‘destroyed’ on July 16.
It is believed a metal pole taken from a gate was used to smash the slide, which has since been taped off, and is no longer safe for use.
Neal Beecroft-Smith, the council’s chairman, said the authority was disappointed at the events of last weekend, which formed part of ongoing problems at the community centre.
He said: “We’ve had a few incidents of anti-social behaviour at the community centre recently, although this is the first incident of vandalism.
“We estimate the slide will cost about £2,500 to replace. As it’s for public use, it must be in a suitable condition – it can’t just be put back together.
“It’s heartening to say Kesgrave doesn’t have many issues with vandalism, and we pride ourselves on having plenty of play equipment for the public to use.”
While Kesgrave Community and Conference centre is a separate entity, the council owns the play area.
A council spokesperson said: “It is such a shame that a few spoil it for others and do not think of the cost or the inconvenience this causes to those who enjoy the park.”
The incident has been reported to Suffolk Police.
Mr Beecroft-Smith said the council partners with Ipswich-based charity 4YP to perform outreach in the town.
This is done by build a relationship with the town’s youngsters.
Mr Beecroft-Smith added: “It’s very disappointing that this has happened and we aim to put it right as soon as possible.
“We want to engage with the town’s youth and provide things to do, such as activities in the community centre, in the hopes it will prevent more incidents such as this.”
A spokesman for Suffolk Police said officers continue to investigate reports of anti-social behaviour at the community centre.
Enquiries into the vandalism are ongoing.
