Ipswich gym owner and former paratrooper gearing up for 230 kilometre ultra marathon through the Amazon Rainforest
A former paratrooper and gym owner is gearing up for one of his toughest challenges yet – a 230 kilometre ultra marathon through the Amazon Rainforest.
From July 1, Luke Read, who founded Airborne Fit at Brightwell Barns, near Martlesham Heath, will brave the unforgiving terrain of Manu National Park in Peru to raise funds for Suffolk Mind.
Regarded as one of the ultimate tests of endurance, the Beyond the Ultimate Jungle Ultra takes place over five days, where contestants must carry everything they need with them.
Luke will have to battle with humidity, extreme elevation, river crossings and dense jungle over a 230 kilometre stretch. It has a 15 per cent completion rate.
Luke said: “As soon as I became aware of the Amazon Rainforest ultra I knew it was a challenge I had to put myself forward for.
“It’s the kind of challenge that forces you to go beyond your physical limits and confront your mental resilience head-on.
“That’s what drew me in. And it mirrors exactly what many people face daily when dealing with mental health struggles.”
For the challenge, competitors have to run the equivalent of a marathon each day, with the final stage extending over 75 kilometres.
Luke, a veteran of the British Parachute Regiment, has supported Suffolk Mind for several years.
He wants to highlight the importance of good mental wellbeing and the services it offers.
Luke said: “Mental health affects us all. During and after my time in the Parachute Regiment, I’ve had to navigate my own challenges.
“Suffolk Mind provides essential support for people in need, and I want to give something back to a cause that has personal meaning for me.”
Henry Tapp, corporate partnerships manager at Suffolk Mind, praised Luke for his support and wished him luck on his challenge.
He said: “Luke has been a great supporter of Suffolk Mind in recent years and we are incredibly grateful to have such a brilliant mental health advocate highlighting our cause.
“Everyone at Suffolk Mind is right behind Luke and we wish him all the best in Peru. We look forward to his safe return and can't wait to hear all about his adventure.
“Thanks to everyone who donates to this amazing feat of endurance. By giving, you are making a real difference to mental health in Suffolk.”
