Police rescue nine stone tortoise which escaped neighbour's garden in Kesgrave

An unusual rescue effort saw police apprehending a huge escapee in Suffolk - in the form of a whopping, nine-stone tortoise.

Titan the tortoise managed to pull off a miraculous vanishing act from his neighbour's garden in Kesgrave last week - despite being penned in by a three foot tall fence.

But Suffolk Police eventually caught up with the 35-year-old animal, which measures about one metre across, at about 2.25pm last Friday and hauled him back home in a police van.

Posting about the incident on Twitter, Suffolk Police wrote: "Thanks again to vigilant members of public in locating this absconder, 9 stone 'Titan' was safely returned home.

"He was too large for the van cell so had to travel wagon side. #slowjustice."

One Twitter user joked: "Just glad you didn't have to call out the shellicopter."
