Book tickets now for The More Things Change at the Theatre Royal, Bury St Edmunds

Vulnerable adults from various community groups will take to the stage in Bury St Edmunds next week to perform a new play.

The More Things Change, which is inspired by local newspaper reports as well as performers’ own experiences of homelessness, mental health, addiction and violence, will run at the Theatre Royal on both Wednesday and Thursday night from 7.30pm.

The play, written by associate artist and playwright Danusia Iwaszko, takes a look at social issues in the town throughout the past 200 years, showing how universal problems have affected life in rural Suffolk.

It also shows that although some things have changed, many still face big problems in the county.

It is part of the theatre’s Community Engagement Programme, which has seen representatives from the Theatre Royal go out into the community over the last four years and work with vulnerable groups and people through workshops on acting, theatre making, writing and music.

Around 50 adults with high support needs, including homeless and vulnerably housed people, women feeling domestic violence, people in recovery from addiction, young people at the YMCA and the elderly, have been involved in making the piece.

The community orchestra, Let’s Praise, is also part of the performance.

Both nights will also see special performances by those involved in Recovery’s Got Talent, which is due to run on October 5. These will be held in the Green Bar after the play.
