A Haverhill park has been named amongst the best in the country for cleanliness and safety.

East Town Park in Haverhill has been awarded The Green Flag Award for 2015/16 from the national charity Keep Britain Tidy.

The announcement came a day ahead of the start of National Love Parks Week (July 24 to August 2) designed to encourage more people to enjoy spending time in local parks.

Cllr Joanna Rayner, St Edmundsbury Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Leisure, Culture and Heritage said: “A lot of work goes into keeping our parks looking so great and so clean and the Green Flag award is very much deserved recognition for that huge team effort.

“Now the schools have broken up for the summer holidays, mums and dads will be looking for ways to keep their youngsters entertained. So why not let the children run off some of that boundless energy by taking them to the park to play, discover nature, and perhaps to enjoy a nice picnic as well.

“Our parks are fantastic places for families to visit. They are not expensive while the Green Flag status should give people peace of mind that they are safe, clean and well looked after. What is more they are right here on your doorstep ready for you to enjoy.”

Inspectors were impressed by the park. On of them said: “This really is a great park for the local community with elements of play, heritage, conservation and activities for everyone to enjoy.

“Haverhill should give a lot of credit to the staff and volunteers who work hard to ensure the park is accessible and enjoyable for everyone.”

It is the fourth year in a row that the park has been awarded a Green Flag.
