Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer has paid tribute to former Waveney MP Bob Blizzard following his death.

It was announced yesterday that the former Suffolk MP, who was born in Bury St Edmunds, had died aged 71.

The 71-year-old enjoyed a long and successful political career, including serving as the first Labour MP for Waveney from 1997 until 2010.

He started his career as a councillor for Waveney District Council, now East Suffolk Council, before eventually becoming the leader.

Political opponents and allies have been paying their respects to Mr Blizzard, including current Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer.

"It is incredibly sad to learn of Bob Blizzard’s death," he said in a post on Twitter.

"His committed service to the people of Waveney made him an inspiration to so many in the Labour Party across Suffolk.

"He brought his joy for life to everything he did. My thoughts are with his family and friends."
