Hundreds flock to Merry Mildenhall Christmas fayre despite wet weather
Hundreds of people flocked to enjoy a popular Christmas fayre in a town centre despite the wet weather.
Merry Mildenhall provided a host of entertainment for visitors yesterday evening with LED Glow Drummers and two Light Gliders illuminating the town centre.
Santa arriving on his sleigh at 5.30pm was the highlight of the evening for many as friends and families gathered in the Market Place to wave and say hello.
The festive event was another big success in the town in spite of the rain, which also struck at last year’s Merry Mildenhall.
King’s Church Mildenhall supplied hot chocolates and food with face painting on offer, while resident David Chambers returned with his photo booth to capture those in the Christmas spirit.
St Mary’s Church welcomed visitors inside who were treated to performances by Mildenhall-based singing group Youth Junction.
About 30 stalls were set up in the area offering a range of food and gifts, while some shops also welcomed customers.
Mildenhall mayor Russell Leaman, who was running Merry Mildenhall as organiser for the fifth time, said: “Merry Mildenhall was once again unfortunately very wet but it was brilliant to see so many people still brave the weather to come along.
“Everyone I spoke to was thrilled it went ahead and thoroughly enjoyed the entertainment and festive cheer.
“The highlight as ever was Father Christmas on his sleigh counting down the Christmas lights switch on.
“Huge thanks to everyone at Suffolk Lowland Search and Rescue who helped with the sleigh, Kings Church for their warm hospitality, and everyone at Mildenhall High Town Council who made this possible.
Cllr Leaman added: “It’s very rewarding to deliver such a great event for the community.
“I'm now thinking ahead to next year and what we can do even better.”
