See pictures of vacant building The Dome in Mildenhall after years of disuse
Pictures of a ‘unique’ building in a Suffolk town that has been left empty for years show what it now looks like after it was put up for sale.
The Dome in Mildenhall, a former sports hall and leisure centre, was closed to the public in June 2021 before it was named in a list of the most captivating heritage sites given listed status by Heritage England in December 2021.
It will be auctioned by Savills on Thursday, October 8 from 9am with the auction price starting at £25,000.
George Goucher, of Savills Auctions, said: “Mildenhall Sports Dome comes to auction with a guide price of £25,000 and is likely to attract a healthy pool of buyers, either looking to return the building back to community use or develop subject to the necessary planning consents.
“Grade II listed, this property presents a unique opportunity to be repurposed into its next phase.
“The lot offers excellent value and I expect competitive bidding to be achieved.”
Owned by Suffolk County Council, the Grade II listed building was erected in 1977 using an innovative method, the Bini System, and is one of two such buildings that still exist in the UK, the other being the Edinburgh Dome at Malvern Girls College.
SuffolkNews reported in August that community leaders had raised concerns over the ‘sorry state’ of The Dome which has a site area of about 0.44 hectares (1.10 acres).
West Suffolk district councillor Andy Neal, who has labelled The Dome as ‘unique’ and ‘iconic’, said he would love to see the vacant building turned into a Lidl or Aldi.
He added that the building must retain its uniqueness.
