Disappointment and frustration as The Original Factory Shop in Mildenhall confirms August closure

A district councillor and a town’s residents have expressed their disappointment and concerns after a shop confirmed its closure.

The Original Factory Shop, in Mildenhall, is to shut at the end of August following a review by the company, with the lease not renewed.

The retail chain sells discounted homewares, furniture and electrical goods, toys, clothing and more.

Cllr Andy Neal, who represents the Queensway ward in Mildenhall, said: “Losing The Factory Shop is a big hit for Mildenhall and there is not another shop like them in the town.

“Losing it over a lease issue and not a trading one is very frustrating and I feel for the dedicated staff that represented the company in such a professional manner.

“It’s a very poor decision for our town and I can only hope the shop does not remain empty for too long.”

In a post on social media, the Original Factory Shop said: “We are sorry to let you know our store will close its doors on August 26.

“We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the local community and our store colleagues for their support throughout their time here in Mildenhall.

“We’d love to see you in store one final time to say goodbye.”

Cllr Neal had previously launched a petition at the start of July in an attempt to prevent the store, which is located in the town’s Market Place, from closing.

Concerns and disappointment have been expressed by residents on social media, including: “It will be sadly missed. They have lovely staff there, many of whom have been there for years and are popular with their customers.”

One comment said: “This is massively disappointing news and this will impact on the footfall and customer spend of other businesses in town.”

Another said: “It is a big loss for Mildenhall and I’m very sorry it is going.”
